JERUSALEM, Israel: Palestinians desperately awaited the arrival of the first shipment of international emergency aid to Gaza on Friday as Israeli forces attacked the enclave from above and warned that a ground invasion was “coming.”

In retaliation for cross-border raids by Hamas, Israel carried out 13 days of reckless airstrikes on Palestinian territory, killing 1,400 people and shooting, maiming or burning alive mostly civilians.

The Israeli army announced Thursday that it had destroyed the rocket launch site and tunnels and said it had “eliminated more than ten terrorists.”

According to the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza, more than 3,785 Palestinians have been killed since the bombing began and a third of the houses are uninhabitable.

Citing the worsening humanitarian crisis, the international community has called on Israel to minimize civilian casualties and bring urgently needed aid to Gaza.

But in Israel, the drums of war have only gotten louder. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rallied frontline troops near Gaza on Thursday.

He wore a bulletproof vest and vowed that the soldiers would “fight like lions” and “win with all their might.” Defense Minister Yoav Gallant also visited the front line and told some of the tens of thousands of soldiers awaiting the ground invasion that new orders would soon arrive.

“At the moment you can see Gaza from a distance, soon you will see it from the inside.”The order will come soon,” he said, predicting “difficult” battles on the horizon.

As US President Joe Biden returned from a solidarity visit to Israel, he called on Congress on Thursday to provide more funding for the grieving country’s war effort.

But he also insisted on the implementation of an agreement negotiated with Israel and Egypt that authorizes limited aid to Gaza from Friday. “The people of Gaza urgently need food, water and medicine,” Biden said in a televised address from the Oval Office after returning from Tel Aviv.

But food, medicine, water treatment materials and blankets are piling up near the Egypt-Gaza border, and doubts are growing as to whether the Rafah border crossing will be opened as planned.

“We hope that there will be a transition tomorrow,” World Health Organization (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Thursday.

“But given the experiences we have had in the last few days, we are also worried whether this will happen.

Drop in the bucket 1

In Geneva, the WHO emergency director called the agreement reached by Biden allowing the transport of 20 trucks a “drop in the bucket of needs.”

“There should be 2,000 trucks,” Michael Ryan said.

The United Nations World Food Program said 951 tons of food arrived or was transported to Rafah, enough to feed 488,000 people for a week.

However, this has not yet been achieved and the humanitarian situation in Gaza is deteriorating day by day.

In a sign of the dire scope of the crisis, the United Nations said efforts to identify the roughly 100 people who died in Gaza had been abandoned.

Since refrigeration was not possible, the bodies were buried in unmarked graves to avoid any risk of disease.

In Gaza, entire blocks of houses were destroyed, according to the United Nations, displacing more than a million of its 2.4 million residents.

witnesses told AFP that the strike damaged the church’s facade and led to the collapse of an adjacent building, while many injured people were evacuated to hospital.

The Israel Defense Forces admitted that a church wall was damaged after an airstrike on a “command and control center of a Hamas terrorist.”

“We are aware of reports of injuries. The accident is under investigation,” the spokesman told AFP.

Travel warnings

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Jordanian King Abdullah II condemned on Thursday the so-called “collective punishment” of the residents of the Gaza Strip.

They also warned of a widening of the conflict, which has sparked anger across the Middle East against Israel and its Western allies.

Sissi and Abdullah, whose countries were the first Arab states to make peace with Israel in 1979 and 1994, are considered important mediators between Israel and the Palestinians.

The intensification of the cross-border conflagration between Israel and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah movement in Lebanon is raising fears of a possible second front.

The United States, Britain and Germany advised their citizens on Thursday to leave Lebanon while flights are still possible.

Hamas military spokesman Abou Obeida called for demonstrations in front of the Israeli and American embassies “in view of their closure and the expulsion of their ambassadors from all Arab and Muslim countries.”

The Arab world is united in anger and condemnation of Israel following Tuesday’s deadly attack on a hospital in Gaza.

Both warring parties blamed the bloody carnage, but neither the origin of the attack nor the number of casualties could immediately be independently verified.

Hamas accused Israel of indiscriminately shelling the hospital, and Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry put the death toll at 471, although that figure is disputed.

Israel blamed Islamic Jihad – a US-backed version of events – for the rocket misfire, pointing to the lack of a large impact crater typical of its airstrikes and claiming that stray rocket fuel had exploded.

Like Hamas, Islamic Jihad is banned as a terrorist group by the United States and other Western governments.

American intelligence estimates that between 100 and 300 people were probably killed in this attack.
